He studied philosophy and economics at the Catholic University of Leuven and obtained a DBA at the IESE-business school in Barcelona in 1995. He is currently Professor Strategy & Organisation at the Hasselt University (Belgium) in the Department of Business Studies and is appointed as visiting professor "Open innovation" at ESADE (Spain) and the Vlerick Leuven Gent School of Management (Belgium).

 

Exnovate is a new, non-profit platform for companies and knowledge intensive organizations that are practicing open and collaborative innovation. In particular, it serves as a clearinghouse and network platform, linking together the international community of companies, academia, governments and service providers. Professor Wim Vanhaverbeke, Hasselt University, one of the founders, writes about why Exnovate can be useful.

However, it is not only a business phenomenon. The knowledge intensive areas of our economy are characterized by rapid innovation fueled by technological and scientific advances. For firms competing in knowledge based industries, continuous access to new information, know-how, and ideas is essential to success. Firms create new knowledge through investments in R&D but, given the rapid pace of knowledge development around the world, and given the numerous scientific and technological frontiers along which innovation takes place, no firm can internally develop all the knowledge needed for success. Firms must, therefore, continuously access knowledge from other organizations including domestic and international firms, government laboratories, and universities.
